AccelGolf is a mobile application (running on iPhone, Blackberry or Android) that acts as a digital scorecard, GPS-enabled range finder and a database featuring info from nearly 24,000 courses across the globe.

Course info is editable by other users – in a crowdsourced stylee – so that it always remains accurate. You can also use the data you collect on your own game to help identify areas for improvement.

And it’s that data (and the community of 57,000 golfers adding to that data) that helps Accelgolf stands apart.

Historical data (from the number of greens you hit in regulation to how well each club in your bag performs) helps ‘lock in’ users. More engaged users ultimately means more data. And more data means a better product to attract more users with.

That kind of data is not only great for golfers, but it’s also golddust for marketers. And the more AccelGolf have, the higher the barrier to entry for competitors.

The fact that all of this can be wrapped up in a single, free, mobile application is a strong indication of the potential of mobile apps as media.
