dbTwang, Kilkenny
I’ve often said here that there’s a social network for every niche, so one for guitarists won’t come as a surprise.
That said, Kilkenny-based dbTwang isn’t really a social network for guitarists at all – but rather one based around guitars, and the people who love them.
The site encourages users to upload and share images and details of the guitars in their collections. These online profiles then act as a kind of ‘guitar passport’ detailing the history and provenance of each instrument.
“one of our long term goals – [is] that in 30 or 40 years time someone buying a second hand guitar can log onto dbTwang, enter the serial number and pull up its history.”
In the process dbTwang is also building a community around this shared interest – and with such a tight focus on the instruments themselves, monetisation should be comparatively simple; whether its facilitating sales of guitars through the site, content partnerships, subscription-based premium content or working with sponsors.
A good model for other object-orientated passions perhaps?
