SXSW (South By Southwest) is a pretty huge conference / festival type thing in Texas, where fans and industry types from the worlds of original music, independent films and emerging technologies converge for a week of fun.
Well, I assume it’s fun as my complete inability to plan ahead means I’ve not managed to save up enough pennies to get there just yet. [Next year though ...]
Anyway, for those of us who can’t make it to the big show, SXSWVideos.com is an unofficial site (i.e. not affiliated with the conference) that aims to “capture the whole scene at SXSW on video” through user-generated coverage and semi-organised street teams.
I’ve written about ‘piggybacking’ a business idea here before (see piggybacking IKEA, Expedia and The Edinburgh Festival) and this looks like another great example. Piggybacking simply means organising a business or project around a well-known brand – tapping into a little of their customer base and profile – while delivering added value to their customers or fans.
In this case the brand just happens to be an event.
It appears that SXSWVideos is ‘brought to you by the fine folks at Viddler‘ (as a brand building exercise persumably) but they’ve also got some sponsors on board so it’s not hard to see how a priavtely run project could make some money.
Think GlastonburyVideos or FestivalVideos or OktoberfestVideos or …
