A Business Model for Solar Energy – SunEdison

Big energy users like shopping malls and office blocks should be prime customers for solar power but the high cost of installation means it’s much more of a long-term play with property owners often only recouping their investment over 10-20 years.

SunEdison has devised a way to provide completely free installation of solar panels in return for a fixed-term commitment to buy power at an agreed price. Property owners have no capital outlay and get to trumpet their green credentials.

SunEdison for their part package up these purchasing agreements to sell to investors – who can also benefit from a variety of green energy incentives.

The model has made SunEdison the largest provider of solar power in the US.

It could actually be great if big companies like malls would use a solar powered system. But due to it’s expensive price, owners are thinking twice. But for the past years, solar cells are getting cheaper and many other methods are being done to drop the price of installation. Solar power is a very critical element in terms of saving our planet from climate change. Not only companies should install solar powered system but also people at they’re homes too.
