We previously took a look at The Bottom Line Book Club, an online coaching program that uses well-known personal and professional development books as source material.
The business was launched by Cath Duncan, a coach and founder of Mine Your Resources, in part as a way to free herself to travel more.
Suitably intrigued, I decided to ask her a few questions about where the ideas and inspiration for the book club came from.
Here’s what she had to say:
I love reading personal development books and I’m always reading to improve my practice as a coach, so it does feel like a bit of a dream-come-true that I’ve found a way to get paid to do what I’d do anyway.
The actual idea came together when I was asking myself questions like, “What do I love to do?” and “What am I really good at?” and, other than my love for reading and personal transformation, I was recognizing that some of my “superpowers” lie in analyzing, synthesizing and teaching, and in converting ideas into action steps that’ll enable people to apply those ideas.
At the same time, I was realizing that I tend to attract self-directed learners who want to know the background behind the coaching tools I use and that I like to share that so that we can be coaching partners coming from the same ideology, and so that they can get into the habit of coaching themselves between sessions and get their changes more quickly as a result.
I would often recommend books to my clients. But, being busy folks who want to get on with getting their change right now, they would often say to me, “Oh, can you just give me the bottom-line?”
And that’s how it came together as the Bottom-line Bookclub!
From a lifestyle perspective, I had a face-to-face coaching practice in Cape Town until a year ago, when I decided to make my business location independent so that my husband and I could take up opportunities to travel. The Bottom-line Bookclub was designed to support a location independent lifestyle, giving both me and my clients the freedom to participate from anywhere in the world, at whatever time suits us best.
