After graduating from one of India’s most prestigious management schools, Kaushalendra Kumar decided to shun the corporate world in favour of selling vegetables on the streets of Patna.
Launched in 2007, his ‘Samriddhi’ project (Samriddhi meaning ‘prosperity’ in Hindi) aims to organise and mobilise the informal and fragmented vegetable sector of Bihar.
The company now employs 14 staff directly with a further 1000 farmers (the “Vegetable Producer Company”) and 80 street vendors (“Vegetable Marketing Company”) associated with the project – supporting an estimated 500 families in total.
In addition to this network of producers and vendors, the company has also begun a free home delivery service – developing a guaranteed income stream for everyone involved in the supply and distribution chain.
