HotPotato.com – Social Networking for Real World Events

HotPotato is an interesting new startup that aims to take the social media world and apply it to ‘real world’ events. Through the site or iPhone app you can find events near you, add your commentary on the event and share photos etc… of the event.

Quite a lot of this can be done – in some way – via Facebook or Twitter (as the interviewer in the video points out). Indeed, Twitter hashtags are regularly used to connect people providing live commentary at an event. For example, as I write this there’s a running commentary on the Irish budget under the hastag #budget10.

That said, Hot Potato takes the idea much further, allowing for greater use of images and video and making use of geolocation in the iphone app (so events find you). It wouldn’t be hard to see the iPhone app in particular being used by a group at a concert, conference or even on a night out.
