The idea of citizen journalists has been around for a while now – members of the public filling the need for news gathering and reporting. Commercially however, few sites have been able to turn this concept into a profitable reality.

Bleacher Report is one that has. Forming what it calls an Open Source Sports Network, the site invites fan-journalists to ‘create and critque high-quality sports analysis’. The 4,000+ fan-journalists contribute for profile rather than pay; with a member critique and voting process in place to help the top content rise to the top.

Unlike traditional sports media, Bleacher Report can provide a unique ‘fans eye view’. There is also the undeniable potential to cover an enormous geographical area and a myriad of sports at all levels.

Commercially, Business Week reports that the site has recently passed the $100,000 monthly revenue mark and the company has entered into licensing deals with Fox Sports and CBS Sports.
