Even occasional visitors to this site will know that we love niche business ideas – the nichier the better. But establishing a successful niche business requires much more than simply having the right stock.
Adra Home (Adra meaning ‘home’ in Welsh) sells contemporary gifts sourced from Wales, designed by Welsh designers or featuring the Welsh language. The products are made by artisans and small independent producers from across Wales and as the sites says, they “only sell products that we’ve fallen in love with ourselves!”
So far, so good. Then again, there are other websites selling Welsh-made products too; but what sets Adra apart is their obvious commitment to the niche they have chosen. As founder Angharad Gwyn explains:
“Wales is full of excellent designers, craftspeople and producers, but very few of their unique goods are available online. I like supporting Welsh producers, and furthermore I love what they produce …”
In addition to selling the products, the fully-bilingual website profiles each producer in an extensive ‘Meet the Maker’ section which adds colour and personality to what could otherwise be a simple shopfront.
Adra also lists boutique-style accommodation across Wales, again in keeping with the company’s vision of promoting a stylish, contemporary Wales free from the traditional clichés. And those intrigued by the Welsh script on some of the products may also appreciate the site’s ‘Learning Welsh’ section.
Becoming a successful niche retail business is as much about being part of a community as it is about selling their products. It relies on the ability to differentiate from bigger, general players through authenticity, passion and demonstrable expertise.
Adra ticks all the right boxes and the founder’s passion for contemporary Welsh design shines through. A great example of niche retail done well – and without a furry Welsh dragon in site.
