Sweemo: The Marketplace for Experiences

Ever fancied tagging along to a film premiere or hanging out in the VIP section at Royal Ascot? Maybe backstage passes at a major festival or getting on the guest list at a new club is more your cup of tea?

Sweemo (short for Sweet Moments) is a marketplace for people to buy, sell and trade experiences and services offered by other site users and businesses – think eBay for experiences rather than ’stuff’

Of course there are plenty of experience companies out there offering everything from spa breaks to track days but where Sweemo may have the edge is in it’s unpredictability.

At the time of writing you can:

  • pick up a date to a sorority party in Mississippi,
  • grab backstage passes to hang out with the bands at the Burning Man Festival,
  • spend a day learning to herd sheep or
  • take part in an expedition to the Antarctic.

For a growing segment of the population, life experiences outweigh physical possessions – they’d rather spend a week trekking through the Andes than buy a(nother) new flatscreen TV.

As the site grows, the challenge will be to keep the experiences interesting and unique (like the ones above) and avoid becoming a clearing house for hotel rooms and spa breaks. Where eBay can live comfortably with the garage sale image, Sweemo must appeal to buyers in search of originality.

Thankfully, they seem to be doing their part to keeping the site unpredictable and engagingly odd. The video above is of the Sweemo CEO getting slapped in the face with a fish – an experience they offered on the site.

Cool article Mark!
In the next few weeks, Sweemo will be making a few changes to the site and kicking off some activity to attract more of the edgy unpredictable experiences such as the “fish slap auction” from people with creative ideas and opportunities, as well as driving buyers looking for originality.
I feel that achieving Critical mass of content and the tipping point is going to be the challenge.

I agree that critical mass is vitally important but would wager that if you get interesting ‘buzz worthy’ experiences onto the site, the rest will likely take care of itself. Either way Sweemo looks like an incredibly fun business with a huge amount of potential.
