Driving the Tiny House Movement

innovative idea: picture of Jay Shafer, company founder of tumbleweed

The combination of the current economic crisis and the rising importance of sustainable living are helping drive a trend towards simplified living. Across the developed world people are de-cluttering, simplifying and downsizing.

Of course, downsizing is a relative concept. For some people it means trading in the Hummer for a hybrid or swapping the 6-bed McMansion for a 4-bed townhouse.

For people like Jay Shafer it means a 90-odd square foot house.

For over a decade Jay (pictured) has been building and living in tiny houses. His business, Tumbleweed Tiny House Company sells plans for tiny houses, publishes books about tiny houses and runs workshops about designing and building tiny houses.

And if you don’t want to go to the hassle of building your own tiny house, you can have one built for you for around $40,000.

The tiny houses run from 65 square foot up to about 140 and because they are on wheels they are classed as trailers – and therefore exempt from the need for building permits.

Although some people do live in them full-time, many are used as vacation homes, guest accommodation or simply planted in back gardens to create additional (and mobile) space. Plans for larger houses (by comparison) range between 250 and a positively gargantuan 837 square feet.

Tumbleweed is leading the charge of the tiny house movement and creating a loyal following in the process. What kind of movement could your business start?
