Celebrity style used to be spread across the pages of the glossy magazines, style-blogs and gossip sites. The user-generated website, Coolspotters.com has been attempting to bring it all into one slick and searchable place – and has secured £2m in additional funding this week for its efforts.
The idea of the site is to make it easy for visitors to find (and buy) the clothes, products and brands being sported by their favorite celebrities in both real life and in the film and TV roles. Users can create profiles of the favorite celebrities (although most of the big names are already on there) and then add products that they seen them wearing in paparazzi pics, on screen or in fashion shoots.
For the more casual browser, you can search based on your fave celebrity to see what they’re wearing and using – or by product and see who’s using it (and presumably avoid any fashion faux pas on your next trip to the Oscars).
Coolspotters is a neat little tie-up of interesting user-generated content and simple contextual advertising (a la Adwords and affiliate links for eBay, Amazon etc…). And while we’d like to see them take it a step further and reward contributors with a slice of the proceeds (either through revenue share or rewards for the most popular ’spottings’) – it’s certainly not a bad model to follow.
