
With a few notable exceptions like Sweden’s Ice Hotel – most hotels are simply varying degrees of luxury. So apart from the mint on your pillow, what makes one hotel stand out amongst the rest?
The Standard hotel in downtown NY has done a pretty good job at setting itself apart and has received rave reviews from the glossy press in the process – many of whom have got a little overexcited by the design of the building itself, straddling a disused elevated subway track in the painfully trendy Meatpacking District.
Apart from the truly stunning views in evidence on their website, what really sets the place apart is the ‘nouveau porno interior’ as described by Arena Magazine (designed by the art director from The People vs Larry Flint) and the impossibly good looking staff – who have their very own calendar on sale via the website (pictured).
Dubbed ‘Citadels of Chic’ by The New York Times, The Standard hotel mini-chain has found a way to make a name for itself by pushing at the boundaries of design and injecting an element of sexiness into an industry where star ratings often matter more than distinctiveness.
