Capturing Your Family Story

Fueled by the potential of the Internet to help you access otherwise inaccessible records, genealogy is a growing industry.

In our search for long lost relatives and scandalous ancestors however, it’s easy to overlook the depth of history and experience locked up in the life stories of our living family.

Memoir Productions is a Vancouver-based [Update: Sorry, that should be Toronto-based] startup determined to help us preserve and celebrate the life histories of our families – and ourselves – for both current and future generations to enjoy.

A family-run business itself, the company produces audio and video memoirs, chronicling the lives of individuals and families.

From their website:

A Memoir is a personal account of stories and events from one’s life. A Memoir may contain elements of genealogy, biography, and chronology in varying degrees. It may be genealogical by identifying ancestors and kin. It may be chronological by providing a timeline of meaningful events in a life. It may be biographical in that it tells many of the stories from one’s life.

Of course, anyone can point a video camera but Memoir Productions use an extensive process of preparatory meetings, interviews and post production before delivering the custom-packaged Memoir.

The total cost ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on the format, details and length of your Memoir package.

It would be easy for just about anyone with a video camera to set up a similar business on a shoestring but (without wanting to sound too corny) when dealing with someone’s lifestory, it’s the empathy, quality of production and passion for storytelling that would separate a successful business in this niche.

Perhaps an idea for a talented videographer or passionate genealogist to be inspired by.
