Babies notoriously do three things eat, sleep and ….. Well, you get the idea.
Keeping track of the second and third is simple enough but with everything else that’s going on, keeping baby feeding times straight can be a nightmare.
Inspired by both her own experiences and those of her friends, Elizabeth Geldart invented the Baby Feed Wheel – a greetings card that doubles up as a reminder of baby’s feed times.
Like so many good ideas, the Baby Feed Wheel did not start life as a plan for a business but as a neat solution to a common problem. We asked Elizabeth to tell us how she got started:
I didn’t actually decide to start a business- I invented what I saw as a really useful product for parents and this evolved into my business.
My inspiration for my first product, the Baby Feed Wheel, came from seeing a friend with a newborn struggling to remember when his last feed was. It brought back memories of my own “hazy days” following the birth of my daughter, nearly three years before and I suggested to my friend that she use a parking disc to keep track of her son’s feeding times. A few days later when I visited I gave her a disk I’d covered in blue paper, and the Baby Feed Wheel was born!
As a Mum myself I realised how useful the product would be, so kept going with it- researched, designed, applied for a patent and then had them made, and now I sell them!
The Baby Feed Wheel is now available in over 100 ‘bricks and mortar’ and online retailers ranging from card shops to party plan companies. It’s also led to a range of styles and new uses – including a medicine reminder that doubles as a get well card.
Although Elizabeth has no plans (or need) to bring in outside capital anytime soon, this is certainly a business for smart baby goods manufacturers, retailers or even magazine publishers in the field, to partner with.
