Greening Your Home for $99

I recently wrote a newspaper article about the best business ideas for 2009 – one of which was a ‘green concierge service’ – helping businesses and homeowners make simple eco-friendly changes to their lifestyle .

Well, we found a few businesses doing just that.

In the US, Green Irene provides green home makeover reports. For $99 a Green Irene consultant will spend between 1 and 2 hours with a homeowner, pointing out simple – and free – changes they can make to become more environmentally friendly. They can also recommend green products and service suppliers – which, of course, they can source or sell.

From the website:

Your local Eco-Consultant will walk through your home with you and develop a customized set of recommendations on what you can do to save money, energy, water, and live a healthier life. Your Eco-Consultant sells many of the green solutions you select.

Green Irene are expanding their reach by recruiting consultants across the US. Would-be consultants operate as individual business owners paying for initial training, materials and samples.

Green door

In the UK, Green Homes Concierge, a London-based startup, provides a similar – but slicker looking – service which focuses more on energy conservation. £199 covers an initial assessment, report and one year’s support and advice on suppliers, grants and products / services.

We expect to see more of these kinds of businesses popping up to serve various geographic markets and niches within the emerging ‘green economy’.

Ideas to emulate or partner with.
