Rent to Own Video Games

Buying video games for the latest console can be expensive – and you never really know whether your next purchase will be one you simply can’t put down or end up gathering dust in the corner.

Kalydo seeks to change that with an interesting business model that mixes the feel of a video arcade with a ‘rent to own’ model that encourages you to play more.

Sign up to Klydo and you can purchase ‘ecoins’ which allow you to play games from their selection on a pay-per-minute basis. The amount you pay however is based on how much you ‘own’ of the game – the more you play, the more of the game you own and the less it costs you to play.

Once you’ve played long enough, you’ll eventually own that game and can play for free.

The site boasts console quality games and invites developers to submit their games to the site on a revenue share model.

Although the website itself would benefit from a simpler explanation or more detailed FAQ, it’s an interesting model that lends itself well to a ‘try before you buy’ economy.

One for big games developers to emulate or partner with perhaps? Better yet, what other products / services could adopt a rent to own model?
