Back in his school days (i.e. a few years ago) Craig Jones was a frustrated band member, “we had a fair few good songs but didn’t know what to do next, we didn’t even know what a record label was.”
So Craig turned to the Internet in search of marketing and promotional ideas, and figuring other bands might be looking for the same info he was, he started a simple links directory – RockLinks.co.uk
Fast forward a few years and RockLinks and its sister site RLMusicservices.co.uk now provide anything and everything that an up-and-coming band could need: band websites, CD duplication, customer merchandise, tour management, album/single releases and press releases.
As it says on the site, “unsigned band services and sensible unsigned band prices.”
We asked Craig to tell us a little more:
At that time I started RockLinks I was still in school so it was a bit of a hobby site. But as the website progressed I started working with a few different bands and began to develop new ideas for the website.
Now RockLinks has worked with hundreds of different bands … Our future plans are to bring out a quarterly magazine featuring upcoming bands, provide expert advice on music marketing and to release a compilation CD.
And even though he’s still only 21, Craig recently scooped a local ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award’ – not surprising when you consider he’s been at it for seven years already.
Certainly there’s something to be said for turning a hobby into a business. Considering your own hobbies and interests, what information or services would be useful for people like you?
