Motivating people to make even minor changes in their lifestyle to help protect the environment and reduce climate change is no simple task.
Despite the best efforts of countless government awareness campaigns many people still view the problem as simply too big to be affected by the actions of just one person.
And, of course, they’re right. Which makes it all a bit ‘chicken and egg’ – if you can’t motivate enough individuals because they don’t feel their actions will make a difference, you’ll never motivate enough individuals so that their collective actions do make a difference.
Or something like that.
CarbonRally.com is a site dedicated to small scale but collective changes in day-to-day living that together, have an impact on the environment and climate change in particular.
Members of the CarbonRally community suggest challenges, the best of which are then posted on the site. Users can then ‘take up the challenge’ either individually or as members of a team – and chart their own progress or their progress compared to other teams and cities.
By effectively ‘keeping score’, Carbon Rally brings together a mix of competition, fun and collective activism – a template that we can see being successfully applied to other worthwhile causes in the future.
