There are an awful lot of worthwhile causes in need of support – too many, in fact, for many people to make an educated decision about where their money should go.
Founded by Alec Reed (the Reed in Reed Recruitment), TheBigGive is designed to make the process of choosing a worthwhile project or charity simpler.
The Big Give is the fast and discreet way for modern donors to find effective charities in their field of interest.
With £1.5 billion being sought by over 4,500 charities on the site, The Big Give is the first stop for any individual or organisation interested in giving intelligently.
Simply visit the site, select your interests and/or location and you can view a list of projects in need of some cash. The site also features links to various resources that help paint a picture of the charity you’re considering supporting (i.e. their finances and how they use them).
Of course, this information is already available, but what TheBigGive does is simplify the process into a transparent ‘online shopping’ experience with which users are likely to be familiar.
And the simpler the process of giving is, the more likely people are to do it. Which, of course, is the point.
TheBigGive also goes further in encouraging donations to good causes. Charity vouchers are promoted as a corporate gift alternative, they’ve just given away £2M in matched funding (i.e. they matched what online donors gave) and back in September they gave away 10,000 £25 charity vouchers which could be donated to any listed cause.
Transparency as an opportunity?
Giving to charity is a lot more complicated than it first looks – you no doubt want your money to be put to good use but the sheer number of charities often makes it difficult to ‘give intelligently’. The more transparent the process becomes the easier it is to make smart decisions.
And it’s not just charity. From retail to business services, when people feel comfortable that they are making smart decisions, they are more likely to buy, or donate, or invest, or subscribe or whatever.
Transparency is a trend that is sure to grow. Whether you’re supporting a worthwhile cause or dreaming up your next business venture, how can you make transparency part of the business model?
Better yet, what businesses could you start where transparency is the business?

Glad you like it!
As a follow up to our £2 million matched funding in December, we have launched a whole section of matched funds, many of which will double your donation to your charity.
Transparency at half the price
