online video tutorial

If you want to learn to play guitar who better to teach you than a music legend or two. Aspiring musicians can now learn online with tutorials from, amongst others, Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, Norah Jones and (for you classic lovers) the New York Philharmonic.

These video tutorials are being offered online via site like Now Play It, Mucony and most recently Apple’s Garage Band.

On a similar note, BrightStorm started offering online video tutorials from award winning teachers to high school students busy prepping for their SATs.

Why We Love This Business Model

Even if you can’t call on the services of one of the Beatles to help attract subscribers, online video tutorials offer a great opportunity for two types of people; experts and people who know experts.

If you’re an expert in your niche you can create a video tutorial series based on what you know. If you know an expert (or where to find one) you can create the series based on their knowledge and promote it using their name – perhaps on a revenue share model to keep your own costs low.

Three Video Tutorial Businesses to Start

Here are three video tutorial series that we just thought of. If you can think of more, add them in the comments below:

  1. Online Dog Training – Put Bruiser through his paces in a series of short instructional videos designed as an introduction to useful techniques. Mix in live Q&A and you’ve a neat subscription model. Use joint ventures to promote it through vets and pet care services.
  2. Crafting – If you’re a wicked weaver, neat knitter or a watercolor wizard then a video tutorial could be a perfect way to monetize your hobby or add an extra dimension to your craft business.
  3. Cooking – Food focused TV is massive. If you can find an angle for your own online cooking series, then why not?

How to Monetize Online Video Tutorials

Of course, it’s good to make money. So, how can you make money from your online tutorial business?

  • Subscription Model – Subscriptions models are great provided you can deliver enough content on a regular basis to justify the price tag.
  • One-Off Model - If you don’t have enough content on one theme to warrant a subscription model you might choose to offer individual tutorials for a one-off fee.
  • Advertising Funded – You could make the tutorials free and make money from advertising on your site, sponsorship or even ads at the beginning or end of each tutorial.
  • Content Marketing - You could use the tutorials as introductions to other services. For example, you might give away short tutorials on dog training to attract people who may be interested in your personal dog training services.

However they are funded, we’re certain online video tutorials will become increasingly popular as online video itself becomes easier to handle.

Making online video tutorials is exactly what I do.

However, mine aren’t live video capture like the examples given above. They’re screen capture.

So the student gets to watch what’s happening on a screen before they try doing it. A great way to teach people how to use a piece of computer software.

Check out http://vzaar.com/blog/2009/01/new-vzaar-video-tutorials for an example of one of my tutorials.
