Men are notoriously bad at buying gifts. The thought of choosing the perfect present for a loved one’s birthday can evoke a slightly nauseous feeling and an occasional twinge in the chest and left arm.
Anyway, GiftGirl offers to help clueless men avoid the palpitations by recommending the perfect gift. In their own words it:
‘is a subscription-based website. No sponsors. No ads. No bias. You simply tell us about the girl, and we’ll tell you what to get.’
In our words, you complete a quick profile form about the person you’re buying for and the occasion – GiftGirl tells you what to get and where you can lay your hands on it. There’s also a reminder service so you don’t forget any big days. Lack of advertising, affiliate links or sponsors means the results should be unbiased.
Subscription costs run from $5 for a one-off to $20 for a year’s worth of gift ideas. If you’re really stuck there’s also a custom consultation option with personal shopping expert and site co-founder, Jean Vouté Pratt, for $200.
We love GiftGirl not only as a business in itself but also for its potential as a business model beyond gifts (professional service recommendations perhaps?).
Smart retailers could even use a similar setup as a custom content project – making it free but based on their own products / services. Other subscription based businesses or retailers could partner with GiftGirl to offer advice to their members.
